Venture OUT school based programs include in-school and after school groups, which are being offered at Hamilton and Victor schools during the 2018-2019 academic year for middle school students grades 5th-8th. Hamilton has two in-school groups, one for 5th & 6th grades and another for 7th & 8th grades, while Victor has one group for 7th & 8th graders.
If you are interested in joining a school based program, talk to your school's guidance counselor.

Venture OUT school based programs are multi faceted, including the following components:
In-school meetings
Service learning project
After school activities
Weekend adventures (1/2 or full day)
Multi day adventures (2 to 7 day overnight trips)
Family events
This year, mentees meet weekly or bi-weekly at Hamilton and Victor, respectively, with B.E.A.R. staff mentors and school counselors where they engage in a sequenced curriculum focused on positive self development. Communication, leadership, team building, and other pro-social behaviors are encouraged, building a sense of cohesion and trust among participants, as well as self esteem and confidence. A service learning project will also be integrated into the in school program, giving mentees the opportunity to connect with the community and collaborate on a project in the service to others. Lots of creativity, planning, communication, and leadership will be needed to execute the project, and mentees will get to invite their families the day of the event to share their hard work and celebrate community.
Venture OUT's after school component builds upon what mentees are learning and practicing in school by offering unique experiences in outdoor activities and adventures, such as hiking, camping, climbing, skiing/snowboarding, snowshoeing, biking, and more! Although participation in the in school groups is highly desirable, spots are limited and therefore in school participation is not required for youth to be eligible to attend after school activities. However, priority for after school activity sign up will be given to in school participants in order to facilitate their year long commitment Venture OUT. Other students will be allowed to sign up as availability allows.
Once mentees have had a taste of a particular activity, Venture OUT gives them the chance to practice new skills by participating in half and full day weekend trips. These trips could include Freestone Climbing Gym, Equine Sanctuary and Rescue, Teller Wildlife Refugee, Lost Trail, and exploring the Bitterroot and Sapphire mountains, just to name a few. Notices will be sent to parents before each scheduled event so youth may sign up in advance.
Weekend and multi day trips are amazing opportunities for youth to really hone their skills in a given activity, develop leadership skills amongst peers, and overcome the challenges of recreating in the wilderness. Trips offer mentees a high number of contact hours with mentors, as well, allowing for the mentor/mentee relationship to become deep and stronger. This year, B.E.A.R. plans to offer a week long year end trip to an outdoor destination of the groups choosing! The trip will be led by B.E.A.R. staff mentors and peer mentors.
